Alkali metals

Alkali metals are in the first group or family of elements listed on the periodic table. The akali metals are located on the far left on the periodic table. They are the first six (except hydrogen) elements in the first row. The metals in general have physical properties such as heat, electricity, malleability, ductility, and shiny. The alkali metals are: Lithium, Sodium, Potassium, Rubidium, Cesium, and Francium.

main article: Lithium

Lithium is the first alkali metal. Lithium was exposed by Johann August Arfvedson but was not isolated by him. It was isolated by William Thomas Brande and Sir Humphrey Davy. The metal was found in 1817. The metal can go through electrolysis and make Lithium Chloride. It has only one valence electron. Lithium can be used for certain things like special glasses and ceramics.

Did you know?
-Cesium is used in Atomic clocks

-Alkali metals are softer than most metals

main article: Sodium

The second alkali metal is Sodium. Sir Humphrey Davy discovered the metal. It was found in 1807. Sodium can do many things such as it can boost high blood pressure. It also has one valence electron. Sodium can be applied for Tetraethyl lead cooling in nuclear reactors.

main article: Potassium

Potassium is the third alkali metal. Sir Humphrey Davy also found this metal as well. It was exposed in 1807. When you put it in water, it bursts into flames. It has only one valence electron and can also be used for electrolysis.

main article: Rubidium

Rubidium is the fourth alkali metal in the row. Robert Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff are the two chemists who discovered the metal. It was found in 1861. It makes fire when it goes in the water. It has one valence electron. It can be revealed in a mineral. Rubidium is a soft, silvery-white, metallic element, ductile. It is very highly reactive.

main article: Cesium

Cesuim is the fifth alkali metal. It was exposed by Fusto Kirchoff. It was found in 1860. It can do certain things as well. It also has one valence electron. It is used to remove air traces in vaccum tubes.

main article: Francium

Francium is the last alkali metal. Marguerite Perey was the individual that discovered the metal. It was found in 1939. Francium does not have any important things in nature. It only has one valance electron. It is not really used for anything.
